All the stone was supplied and fabricated by Capital Stoneworks in Bridgeport, MI. The size and weight of the limestone components needing replacement posed significant challenges. Normally, using modern day technology, the stone would be 3D scanned and recreated on a CNC machine. Several of the existing stones that needed to be recreated were so far gone they couldn't be scanned. To achieve precision, the initial piece underwent meticulous hand-carving before being replicated through advanced techniques such as CNC machining. The outcome? Michigan Central Station - Waiting Room Exterior One of the most significant parts of the restoration of MCS was restoring the front waiting room limestone façade. During our initial inspection of the structural steel in the waiting room, we discovered significant deterioration, indicating extensive repairs and replacements would need to take place. As part of this process, we had to carefully disassemble the upper portion of the existing façade, salvaging the stone and removing all backup brick in order to expose the existing structural steel. With each steel piece exposed, precise measurements were taken before repair or replacement began. Once all the limestone was salvaged, we were able to determine what pieces needed to be repaired or replaced. We sourced stone from the original quarry to ensure the closest possible match. Among the largest components requiring replacement were the column capitals. Some of the salvaged limestone sections weighed as much as a bulldozer, posing a formidable challenge. In total, we removed and replaced over 120,000 backup bricks and reinstalled more than a couple thousand pieces of stone and fabricated more than 4,000 cubic feet of new stone. In collaboration with IDEAL Contracting , Fraco, and Resurgent Engineering, we designed and erected a custom scaffolding system that would allow complete access of the façade of the entire office tower. Resurget Engineering led the charge in designing a system that could withstand intense structural loads. The challenge was coming up with a system that would be minimally invasive to the building. The final design consisted of large sections of I-beam that were attached to the structural steel of the building. The scaffolding platform was able to bear on these I-beams allowing us to maneuver around the building without creating huge penetrations. In conjunction with FRACO, we led the charge opening up sections of the building to tie in the scaffolding. The end result allowed us to access roughly half of the building from one end to the other.
